What are Thread Veins (Spider Veins)?
Thread veins, also known as spider veins or broken capillaries, are tiny, dilated blood vessels that appear just beneath the surface of the skin. They typically appear as red or blue lines on the legs or face, however can appear anywhere on the body. They occur when small veins near the skin’s surface become damaged or dilated, causing them to become visible. The medical term for this condition is “Telangiectasia”.
Thread veins are often referred to as spider veins because of their “spidery”, web-like appearance, with damaged veins resembling a network of fine lines branching from central points on the skin’s surface. Whilst thread veins are completely harmless from a medical perspective, they can be a cosmetic concern for a lot of people, impacting self-esteem and confidence.
At AVA Clinics, we provide a range of effective treatments designed to improve the appearance of thread veins and alleviate associated symptoms. Our procedures are straightforward and routine, offering individuals the opportunity to easily address their concerns and regain confidence in their skin’s appearance.

Thread Vein Symptoms
In most cases, thread veins do not cause any symptoms other than how they impact the appearance of the skin. The majority of people who seek treatment for thread veins are looking to improve their cosmetic appearance and to regain their confidence.
Some people, however, do exhibit certain symptoms and it is recommended to consult with an expert to assess any indicators of underlying venous insufficiency, particularly if thread veins are present on the legs.
Some common symptoms associated with thread veins are as follows:
Appearance of red or blue veins
The most noticeable symptom is the appearance of red or blue veins on the skin’s surface. The veins are typically thin and concentrated to areas such as the face or legs.
Cosmetic concerns
Many people seek treatment due to cosmetic concerns on the appearance of their skin, which can make people self-conscious and have an impact on their mental health. The desire to improve the overall appearance of the skin and boost self-esteem is a common motivation for seeking cosmetic interventions.
Mild discomfort
Some individuals may experience mild discomfort or aching in the affected area. This discomfort is usually not severe and may be more noticeable after prolonged periods of standing or sitting. However, it’s important to distinguish between the mild discomfort associated with thread veins and more significant discomfort related to other serious vascular conditions like varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Itching or burning
In more severe cases, spider veins may occasionally cause itching or burning sensations, often due to the accumulation of metabolic waste products in the surrounding tissues. If itching or burning is a significant concern, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out other potential underlying conditions.
What Causes Thread Veins?
There are many causes of thread veins, and in most cases the exact cause remains unknown. However, several factors are commonly associated with the development of thread veins:
- Genetics: Some people may inherit a predisposition to develop thread veins. Genetic factors can influence the strength and integrity of blood vessel walls.
- Age: The ageing process can contribute to the weakening of the skin and blood vessels. As people get older, the skin loses its elasticity, and the veins may become more visible near the surface.
- Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones, such as those occurring during pregnancy, menopause, or as a result of birth control pills, can impact the development of thread veins. Hormonal changes may affect the elasticity of blood vessel walls.
- Trauma or injuries: Injuries or trauma to the skin can damage blood vessels and contribute to the formation of thread veins. This is more common in areas where the skin has been subject to injury or repeated trauma.
- Other factors include sun damage, lifestyle choices (such as smoking or excessive alcohol consumption), and prolonged periods of standing or sitting.
Thread veins can also be caused by varicose veins. Increased pressure in the veins can push pooled blood back into smaller veins, causing them to become damaged and appear through the surface of the skin. The alternative is not true however, and thread veins do not cause or become varicose veins over time.
Complications and Risks if Left Untreated
Whilst thread veins are generally not associated with serious health risks, untreated cases can sometimes lead to complications.
Thread veins can progressively worsen over time and cause further cosmetic concerns. They are often considered aesthetically undesirable, and this may continue to affect a person’s confidence and self-esteem, especially when they are visible on prominent areas of the body like the face, legs, or chest.
In some cases, thread veins may cause mild itching or discomfort, particularly if they are located on sensitive areas of the skin. This discomfort is usually minimal but can become bothersome over time.
Bleeding and infections
While it’s uncommon, thread veins can cause skin to become fragile, making the person susceptible to minor injuries that may result in bleeding. Due to their delicate nature, these veins can be more prone to breaking, especially on areas of the body where there is friction or pressure.
Bleeding from thread veins is typically minimal but may be a concern, particularly if the skin is broken. Compromised integrity of the veins may increase the risk of infection if bacteria enter the damaged area, resulting in redness, swelling, and more serious health complications.
Venous insufficiency
Thread veins on their own rarely lead to complications, however in some cases they can be an indicator of underlying venous insufficiency that should be looked into to prevent any condition worsening, especially if they are located on the legs.
Venous insufficiency occurs when the veins have difficulty returning blood from the legs to the heart. Thread veins on the legs, especially if they are widespread, may be associated with this. Identifying and addressing underlying venous insufficiency is important to prevent the progression of more significant venous conditions, such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) or venous ulcers.
Blood clots
In some cases thread veins can increase the risk of blood clots, although this is more common with varicose veins.
Thread Vein Prevention
Whilst spider veins cannot always be prevented, there are certain simple measures that can be taken to help avoid thread veins, reduce the risk, slow their progression:
- Stay active: Regular physical activity can help improve blood circulation, with exercises that promote leg movement, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, being particularly beneficial for vein health.
- Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can put additional pressure on your veins and increase the risk of developing thread veins.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Stopping smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can contribute to better vein health. Drinking an adequate amount of water daily helps maintain blood viscosity and supports overall circulation. A diet rich in fibre, antioxidants, and nutrients such as vitamin C can support overall vascular health.
- Elevate your legs: Elevating your legs above the level of your heart encourages blood flow back to the heart and can help reduce pressure in the veins and alleviate strain.
- Avoid prolonged sitting or standing: If your daily routine involves long periods of sitting or standing, take regular breaks to stretch and move your legs. Shift your weight from one leg to the other and perform ankle exercises to keep blood flowing.
- Wear compression stockings: Compression stockings provide gentle pressure on the legs, helping to improve blood circulation and prevent blood from pooling in the veins.
- Protect your skin from the sun: Prolonged sun exposure can weaken the skin and blood vessels, potentially contributing to the development of thread veins. Use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and seek shade when outdoors.
- Limit wearing of high heels: Wearing high heels for extended periods can strain calf muscles and impede blood flow. Opt for shoes with lower heels and good arch support to promote healthy circulation.
- Avoid crossing your legs: Sitting with your legs crossed can restrict blood flow and contribute to poor circulation. Sit with both feet flat on the floor to maintain proper blood flow.
