What does the Avulsions Procedure Involve?
Before the procedure, the position of the varicose veins to be removed are marked on the skin. The leg is then cleaned, and local anaesthetic is administered to ensure you feel no pain or discomfort during the procedure. Tiny incisions are then made along the course of the varicose veins, with sections of the vein being hooked, detached and carefully removed from the body. Dressings are applied to close the wounds, and bandages are applied on top of these to reduce any swelling and bleeding.
Avulsions are typically used when sclerotherapy is not an appropriate treatment (e.g. if the patient is allergic to the sclerotherapy solution) or if there is a desire for results to be seen more quickly. With avulsions, the veins are physically removed and therefore the visible results are noticeable much more quickly than with sclerotherapy.

The Avulsions Procedure
Avulsions will typically be performed alongside EVLA and your vascular surgeon will undertake the following steps during your procedure:
1. Consultation
Your avulsions treatment for varicose veins begins with an initial free consultation. While we can start with a phone conversation, it’s necessary for you to visit one of our clinics so that our specialists can thoroughly assess your condition, go over your symptoms and medical history, and conduct a comprehensive examination of your veins using duplex ultrasound. This assessment is vital for determining the best treatment for your varicose veins.
2. Preparations
On the day of your procedure, our team will guide you through the necessary preparations. You will be given specific instructions on any preparations that may be required ahead of your treatment, these may include:
- Fasting: You may need to fast for a specific period and abstain from eating or drinking before the procedure.
- Medication: Please let our team know about any medications or supplements you are currently using, as certain medications like blood thinners may require adjustment prior to the procedure.
- Clothing: On the day of your treatment, it’s recommended to wear loose and comfortable clothing for better mobility and ease of movement.
Following our pre-treatment instructions diligently will help optimise the procedure and minimise any potential risks.
3. Vein segment identification
Before the procedure begins, firstly your surgeon will mark the positions of the varicose veins to be removed on your skin whilst you are standing up. When you are standing, varicose veins can be more pronounced or visible in this upright position. This helps your surgeon to accurately map out the affected veins, target, and remove them during the treatment.
4. Local anaesthetic
Your leg will be cleaned and dressed with drapes before local anaesthetic is administered to numb the treatment area. This ensures that you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the process.
5. Micro-incisions and vein removal
Small, micro-incisions are made along the targeted varicose veins. Through these incisions, your specialist vascular surgeon from our expert team will skillfully remove the affected vein segments, ensuring minimal scarring and optimal outcome.
Veins are removed using a small hook-like instrument to grab the vein and carefully pull it through the incision. Small forceps are then used to pull the vein from the area and detach it. For especially long varicose veins, small segments of the vein can be sequentially removed through multiple incisions.
6. Compression and Recovery:
Following the procedure the incisions will be dressed and compression stockings or bandages will be applied to the treated leg. This compression aids in the healing process and helps maintain proper blood flow. You will have the option to relax in our recovery room if needed, but will be able to return home on the same day with minimal downtime.
Avulsions Aftercare
After treatment it is essential to follow proper aftercare to ensure a speedy recovery and minimise any discomfort.
After treatment you will be able to walk immediately, however it is advisable to avoid any strenuous activities for at least a week. You may experience some discomfort, bruising, or swelling in the treated area, but this is normal and will subside in a few days. You surgeon will advise on other aftercare steps, which may include:
- Wear compression stockings: Use compression stockings as per your surgeon’s advice to promote blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots following the procedure.
- Stay hydrated: Ensure you stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water to prevent constipation, which could hinder vein health and recovery.
- Take it easy: Rest and avoid any strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and exercise, for at least a week. This will give your body the time it needs to heal.
- Keep the area clean: Keep the treated area clean and dry to reduce the risk of infection. Avoid taking baths or soaking in a hot tub for a few days after the procedure.
- Follow up with your surgeon: Your surgeon will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress and ensure that you are healing correctly. A follow-up session with your surgeon is included within your pricing package.
Benefits of Avulsions
Avulsions offer several advantages to other treatments and provide fast-working results when used alongside EVLA:
- Minimally invasive: Avulsions involve only small micro-incisions, resulting in minimal scarring, reduced pain, and a quicker recovery time.
- Highly effective and quick-working: Avulsions address varicose veins by removing the malfunctioning vein segments, offering immediate cosmetic improvements and enhanced blood flow.
- Local anaesthetic: Usually carried out with a local anaesthetic, avulsions reduce the potential dangers of general anaesthesia and lead to a quicker recovery period.
- Outpatient procedure: Avulsions are performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home on the same day with minimal disruption to your daily life.
- Fast recovery: Patients usually experience a faster recovery compared to traditional vein surgery, often resuming normal activities within a day or two.
- Low risk of complications: Avulsions typically pose a decreased likelihood of complications in contrast to conventional surgical procedures, resulting in a lower risk of infection, nerve damage, or difficulties with wound healing.
- Long-lasting results: The avulsions procedure involves the complete removal of varicose veins, providing long-lasting relief and reducing the need for repeat procedures.
- Minimal discomfort: Most patients usually experience only mild discomfort both during and after the procedure, which can usually be relieved with over-the-counter pain medications.
Risks and Complications of Avulsions
It’s important to understand that avulsions (phlebectomies) are a very effective treatment for varicose veins, and are well-tolerated by patients. However, despite the many advantages avulsions offer, like any surgery, there are associated risks that should be acknowledged.
Risks and complications of Avulsions can differ from individual to individual, and your surgeon will be able to offer personalised advice. Below are examples of the reported risks:
- Temporary discomfort: Some patients may experience mild discomfort or a burning sensation during and after the avulsions procedure. However, this is usually brief and manageable with painkillers.
- Bruising and swelling: It is normal to experience bruising and swelling in the treated area after being treated with avulsions. These side effects usually subside within a few weeks but can be uncomfortable during the early stages of recovery.
- Numbness or tingling: There is a slight risk of temporary numbness or tingling around the treated area, which may occur due to irritation of nearby nerves. This sensation typically resolves over time.
- Infection: Although rare, there is a minimal risk of infection at the site of the avulsions procedure. This is the same as any medical treatment which breaks the surface of the skin. Signs of infection include heightened discomfort, inflammation, or discharge from the incision site and can be addressed by your healthcare team if necessary.
- Scarring: While avulsions typically result in minimal scarring, there is a possibility of scarring at the incision sites, particularly if they are not cared for properly during the healing process.
AVA Clinics exclusively employs consultant vascular surgeons to diagnose and treat patients, guaranteeing the use of the same high-quality techniques found in the NHS. Unlike other national clinics, we do not compromise treatment outcomes by having GPs or nursing staff carry out procedures, thus reducing potential treatment risks.
